IAB Meetings
The Broadband Institute holds a semi-annual meeting with its advisory board of research sponsors in the fall and spring (IAB). These meetings are an opportunity for participating companies to review the activity on the funded faculty projects, as well as determine the research directions and focus for the following year. Our next meeting will be held October 20 & 21 in Midtown Atlanta.
Please let us know if you'd like to attend.
October 29 & 30, 2007: IAB
The Georgia Tech Broadband Institute’s fall ’07 Industry Advisory Board meeting was held October 29 & 30. Approximately 60 guests from industry, Georgia Tech faculty and students, and the Georgia Research Alliance, attended the pre-event social and board meeting. The companies represented included BellSouth and Cingular – the new AT&T -- Cox Communications, Tellabs, Arris, Nortel Networks, Motorola and Alcatel-Lucent, among others.
Campus organizations represented included ECE, CoC, LCC, GVU, GTRI, OIT and ATDC.
Invited speakers included AT&T Labs President and CEO Keith Cambron, Tellabs’ Rick Younce, Nortel’s John Yoakum, and Cox Communications’ Vince Groff. Dave Kaufman spoke at Monday evening’s social event on his book, “Peachtree Creek, a Natural and Unnatural History of Atlanta's Watershed.”
Since its founding in 1999, the Institute has developed into an impressive consortium of industry and academic colleagues working to solve pressing challenges inherent in broadband technologies and services.
Highlights of the meeting included:
- Next-Generation Applications, by Keith Cambron;
- Broadband Institute research review by Nikil Jayant, director;
- Poster show with 30 students;
- Perspectives on mobile gaming from Maribeth Gandy and Sergio Goldenberg;
- Demonstrations on Optical Broadband Convergence, Wireless HDTV over Fiber, and Enhanced IPTV via Wireless Networks.
Industry feedback following the technical sessions encouraged more time with the students, and exposure to more of Georgia Tech’s resources and abilities.
"This was one of the best board meetings in recent memory,” said Broadband Institute Director Nikil Jayant, “largely because we were fortunate to bring together a stellar cast of industry folks who took in just about every part of the program, from start to finish.”
Dr. Jayant noted that the students delivered their posters “in impeccable style,” and the industry representatives spoke with enthusiasm about their bilateral projects with the Broadband Institute. “The dinner keynote by Peachtree Creek author Dave Kaufman was a treat, and the technical keynote by Keith Cambron, CEO of AT&T Labs, was as authentic as one gets. By the end of the second day, as we completed the customary roundtable of industry impressions, we gained a fine validation of our pre-competitive research program, and recorded valuable ideas for its 2008 thrusts, notably Agile Networks and IPTV. Bilateral projects on optical-wireless convergence, 100 G/bs Ethernet, advanced cable networks and mobile broadband gaming are also well positioned for continued impact in the coming year.”
Alcatel-Lucent and Georgia Tech Planning 4G Services Center of Excellence
Center Intends to focus on advanced communications applications, challenges and solutions
San Francisco, October 24, 2007 – Alcatel-Lucent, (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU), and Georgia Institute of Technology today announced, here at the CTIA Wireless IT & Entertainment trade show and exhibition in San Francisco, that they are in negotiations to establish the Alcatel-Lucent Center of Excellence for ultra-high bandwidth services to jointly develop augmented reality applications and massive multiplayer online games for mobile devices.
Under the proposed strategic agreement, Alcatel-Lucent and Georgia Tech would form a team, with funding from Alcatel-Lucent, on the university campus dedicated to developing high-bandwidth applications, identifying the network challenges that accompany such applications and creating solutions to those challenges.
The joint work would focus on augmented reality, which is the addition of computer-generated graphics to a real scene, as well as multiplayer online gaming and television-gaming convergence.
The Alcatel-Lucent and Georgia Tech partnership would be one of the first under the new University Innovations Program that Alcatel-Lucent also announced today.
“Combining Alcatel-Lucent's leadership in wireless and convergence technology, with Georgia Tech, one of America’s top research universities, will spark innovation leading to more exciting and robust applications that carriers can offer their customers no matter how they connect,” said Jessica Stanley-Yurkovic, Vice President, North America Marketing, Alcatel-Lucent. “Our goal is to create scenarios in Georgia Tech’s research labs that challenge the maximum capability of current wireless systems so that we can develop services and technologies that go beyond today’s capabilities, toward a next-generation high-bandwidth user experience.”
Alcatel-Lucent and Georgia Tech intend to have prototype applications and a “test bed” in place by the end of 2008.
“Alcatel-Lucent’s view of network-challenging applications is timely and market-leading, and represents a definitive effort to articulate and exceed industry expectations for mobile services, including 4G,” said Nikil Jayant, Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar and Director of the Georgia Tech Broadband Institute. “Alcatel-Lucent is, in effect, looking into the future to develop enjoyable and engaging services, while buttressing its wireless network capabilities to make them 4G-ready. In addition, this program would bring together researchers from Georgia Tech’s School of Electrical & Computer Engineering, the College of Computing, the Interactive Media Technology Center and the School of Literature, Communication and Culture in an exciting convergence of disciplines and talent.”
Alcatel-Lucent University Innovations Program
Alcatel-Lucent is teaming with leading universities to uncover new opportunities for ultra high bandwidth applications (wireless and wireline) to help visualize the future. Through this program, Alcatel-Lucent will support the development of new communications services that bring value to society: consumers, educational and non-profit institutions, and business. These applications and services will be based on creating innovations utilizing key emerging technologies and trends such as convergence, mobility, broadband and ultra-high bandwidth applications.
